If you think that the main issue that overweight people are battling with is just their outer appearance, then you are seriously wrong. The truth is, it’s their health that is at great risk. Overweight people are more likely to develop health problems as compared to people whose weight is just fit for their age and height.
Two of the most common illnesses that overweight people develop is heart disease and stroke. In fact, these two are considered as the leading causes of death and disability for both men and women who are obese.
It is because overweight people are more likely to have high blood pressure which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Moreover, the high blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides could also lead to heart disease and are often linked to being overweight. When a person is overweight, he/she has a greater chance of experiencing chest pain which is caused by the decrease of the oxygen to the heart. Good news though, according to research, just being able to lose at least 10% of the excess weight could already reduce this risk of developing heart disease and stroke.
Another common illness that an overweight person is most likely to have is the type 2 diabetes or the non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. This type of illness reduces the body’s ability to control blood sugar. The body also tends to be resistant to insulin which is needed to maintain a normal blood sugar. This happens because when there is excess body fat, the insulin becomes less effective at getting glucose into cells, which is the body’s main source of energy.
Cancer could most likely occur to overweight people which includes cancer of the uterus, gallbladder, cervix, ovary, breast, and colon. Cancer occurs when cells in one part of the body such as the colon grow out of control in an abnomal way. These cancerous cells spread to other parts of the body and complicate the condition. There is, however, no known reason how being overweight could increase cancer risk.
An overweight person is also prone to developing a serious sleeping disorder such as sleep apnea. It is a condition wherein a person sleeping stops breathing for short periods. Overweight people are at risk of having this kind of illness because of the possible more stored fats around his/her neck which make the airway smaller and eventually cause difficulty in breathing.
Osteoarthritis is another health risk related to being overweight. Osteoarthritis is a joint disorder which causes the joint bone and cartilage to wear away. The extra weight causes the joints to wear away since they may place extra pressure on joints and cartilage. Furthermore, overweight people may have higher blood levels of substance that cause inflammation which is also a great risk for osteoarthritis.
Other potential health risks involve with being overweight include gout or a disease caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood, gallbladder disease, and fatty liver among the others. Thus it is highly important that you maintain just the right weight to be able to avoid these kinds of health risks.
